Our Honours
Each year, the University Sports Association selects elite athletes to be recipients of "Ben Lexcen Scholarships". The criteria are very strict and representation at State level is the absolute minimum. UNSW Netball has been very lucky to have a Ben Lexcen Scholar for past two years, who has offered a great deal to our Club. Early in the year, players who play in comps run by the district association can attend selections to represent those associations at State League level. This is the most elite level of competition after the Commonwealth Bank Trophy which you can see on TV. UNSW players are regularly selected into one these rep teams. We have players representing the Randwick Netball Associations (RNA) and the Sutherland Netball Association (SNA). There are 5 divisions of State League in NSW. Over summer, State League turns into the Night Interdistrict (NID) competition, played in the evenings. Players are chosen in exactly the same way as for the Winter State League teams. Each year the cream of our crop is selected into a women's and a mixed team to play InterVarsity (IV). These teams are sent to the Australian University Games (AUG) in July to compete against other universities. The standard is mid to high State League level for the top placed Universities. Players within teams in the competition run by RNA are given Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards each week using a "3-2-1" system. The player in each team who has gained the most MVP points by the end of the season earns the overall MVP award for that team. For teams that play in MORE than 1 finals game, we also award a Player of the Finals (PoF). Awarded at the coaches discretion, this is for someone who stepped up in these pressure games. Finally, our two most coveted awards. Because UNSW wants to foster and improve netball right across the board - we strongly encourage players to continue to train and improve regardless of their standard. The award we most like to give out at the end of the season is the Player of the Year award. The winner of this award is someone who has pushed themselves continuously throughout the season. They may be someone from our top team or our bottom team, but is someone who has worked very hard to become a better netballer regardless of their initial standard. All those nominated for this award should feel proud of themselves and the winner should be very proud indeed!!!! Additionally, we feel that those who contribute to the Club "above and beyond the call of duty" should be recognised. Everyone knows that being on a club committee is thankless job but what about all those club members who continue to do that little bit extra - without the recognition of a committee position, without any thanks whatsoever? It is these people who make a club great and we are always EXTREMELY honoured to be able to award Club Member of the Year. |
